Software License Agreement
This agreement sets out how you may use OwlAttic Terminal (the “Software”), made by OwlAttic, LLC (“OwlAttic”, “we”). By installing or using the Software, you accept it. If you do not accept it, do not install or use the Software.
The Software is licensed to you, not sold. OwlAttic, and those who licensed parts of the Software to us, keep ownership of it.
Free
You may download, install and use the Software free of charge, on any number of computers and for any purpose, including commercial work. The free edition has the limits described in the app and on our website, such as a maximum number of saved servers.
Pro
A Pro license is bought with a single payment and unlocks the Pro features. You receive a license key by email.
- One person. A Pro license belongs to the person it was bought for. You may not share it, or let others use it. An organization needs one license for each person who uses the Pro features.
- Device limit. A license may be active on a limited number of computers at the same time. The limit is shown on our website when you buy. If you need more, write to us and explain your situation; we may raise your limit.
- Yours to keep. You may use the versions of the Software that your license covers for as long as you like.
- Updates. Your license includes the new versions we release during the update period shown when you buy. After that period, the versions you have keep working; newer versions may require you to renew.
Activation
To use the Pro features on a computer, you activate your license on it. Activating, and checking an activation, needs an internet connection.
- When you activate, the Software sends our license server your license key and the details needed to tell your computers apart, such as a device identifier generated by the Software, the app version and the operating system. The Privacy Policy describes this information.
- If an activation would take you over your device limit, the computer that was activated longest ago is deactivated automatically. You can also deactivate a computer yourself.
- The Software contacts the license server from time to time to confirm that its activation is still valid. If it cannot reach the server for a long time, it may ask you to connect before the Pro features continue.
The free features never need activation, and never connect to us.
What you may not do
You may not, and may not help or allow others to:
- share, sell, rent, lend or publish a license key, or use a key that was not issued to you by us;
- remove, bypass or interfere with license checks, activation or the device limit;
- copy, modify, decompile or reverse-engineer the Software, except where the law allows it despite this restriction, or where an open-source license that applies to a component allows it;
- distribute the Software, or offer it to others as a hosted service; anyone can download it from our website instead;
- use the Software to break the law, or to reach systems you are not authorized to use.
Your data and your servers
The Software keeps your server list, settings, saved passwords and private keys on your computer. Your vault is encrypted with your master password, which never leaves your computer. We cannot recover it: if you forget your master password, the vault cannot be opened. Keep backups of anything important.
Use the Software only with servers, devices and accounts that you own or are authorized to use. Having a password, a key or network access to a system does not by itself mean you are authorized to use it.
The Software does what you tell it to: it runs the commands you type or send, transfers and edits files, and forwards ports. You are responsible for those actions and their results. Before working on important systems, keep tested backups and check commands before you run them. The Software is not a substitute for backups, access controls or other safeguards.
High-risk uses
The Software is not designed or tested for systems where a failure could cause death, injury, or serious environmental or property damage, such as medical, aviation, nuclear or other safety-critical systems. Do not rely on it as the only means of operating or controlling such systems.
Third-party services
Some features may connect the Software to services run by others, using your own accounts or API keys, for example an AI model provider. When you use them, your data goes directly from your computer to that service, under its own terms and privacy policy. We do not control these services and are not responsible for them, for their availability or for what they charge you.
Open-source components
The Software includes open-source components, such as libghostty-vt from the Ghostty project. Each is licensed under its own terms, which come with the Software. Nothing in this agreement limits the rights those licenses give you.
Updates
We may release updates to fix problems or improve the Software. This agreement applies to them, unless an update comes with a different agreement.
Beta versions
A version that our website or the app marks as a beta is a test version, offered free of charge so that the Software can be tried and improved. For a beta version, in addition to the rest of this agreement:
- Your data may not carry over. We do not guarantee that settings, saved connections, the vault, logs or other data created or changed with a beta version can be read, kept or moved by later versions, including later beta versions. After an update you may have to set up your connections again.
- Keep your own copies. Before each update, back up your data folder, and keep your passwords and private keys somewhere else as well. Do not rely on a beta version as the only place where you keep them.
- Things may change. A beta version may contain errors, and its features may change or be removed without notice.
To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for data that is lost, or can no longer be read, because of a beta version or an update from one.
No warranty
We take care to make the Software reliable. Even so, to the extent the law allows, it is provided “as is”, without warranties of any kind, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement. We do not promise that it will be free of errors or that it will work with every server or system.
If you are a consumer, you keep the guarantees and remedies that consumer law gives you. For example, in the European Union and the United Kingdom, digital content must conform to what was agreed.
Limitation of liability
To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential losses, such as lost data, lost profits or downtime. Our total liability under this agreement is limited to what you paid for your license, or US$50 if you use the free edition. Nothing in this agreement limits liability that the law does not allow us to limit.
How this agreement ends
You can end this agreement at any time by uninstalling the Software.
It ends if you seriously break it, for example by sharing your license key or bypassing license checks. Except in cases of fraud or a reversed payment, we will email you before we deactivate your license.
If you receive a refund for your Pro license, or your payment is reversed, your Pro license ends and is deactivated. You can keep using the free edition.
Export and sanctions
You may not buy a license or use the Software in breach of United States export controls or sanctions, including in countries or regions under a US embargo, or if you are on a US government list of restricted parties.
General
This agreement is governed by the same law, and disputes are handled in the same way, as under our Terms of Service. If any part of it cannot be enforced, the rest still applies. We may update this agreement; we will publish each new version here with a new date, and a change will not take away rights you have already paid for.
